About these checklists

Home and community care puts workers alone in places the organisation does not control: a client's home, their street, their car park. Under the WHS Act, the care provider is still the PCBU for that work and has to identify the hazards in each home and manage them so far as is reasonably practicable, consulting workers as it goes. The client's home is the worker's workplace while care is being given.

The checklists here follow a visit from start to finish. A home visit safety assessment before the first visit sets the conditions, such as pets shut away, two workers, or daytime visits only. A lone worker check-in procedure covers arrival, departure and what happens when someone is overdue. The hoist pre-use check and the manual handling risk assessment cover client transfers, one of the main injury risks in care work. The PPE donning and doffing checklist supports infection control, and the carer vehicle check covers the driving between visits.

These templates are a starting point. Adapt them to your organisation's policies, the client's care plan and any requirements from your funding body, and check with your state regulator where you are unsure what applies.
